In reality, the degree to which we are friendly varies from person to person. For some of us, the burden of the responsibility we carry is often quite heavy that it stifles our relational competency. Maybe I should just confess right now - that is my excuse for not being as relational as I should be but I promise I am working steadfastly on it! Life is really all about relationships. However, we need to be a tad bit picky about who we categorize as a friend.
The friends we choose to invest our time in has a lot to say about how far we get in life. If you are the smartest in your group, it's probably time to make new friends. I've never seen a great leader who is surrounded principally by questionable characters who don't have anything on their minds. As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, "If you want to be great and successful, choose people who are great and successful and walk side-by-side with them."
You have the choice in deciding who you take with you on your life journey and not everyone is qualified to ride in your "car"! The people you have in your "crew" will determine your level of success or failure. If you want to operate at the highest level, learn to be very selective about the people you choose to walk with you. As you move your life from stage to stage, there will be certain people that you can't take with you because they simply don't fit anymore.
With your decision to step up higher, find people who are at a higher plain than you are and walk with them. Know that this does not prevent you from helping to develop others. It is critical to spend time with others who have decided to move up higher and pour yourself into them but you cannot afford to invest your valuable time in those who have decided to remain exactly where they are. You can't take anyone on a journey they are simply not interested in going on. Realize that not everyone wants what you want.
If you've made a commitment to grow and be the best and highest version of yourself that you can be, start looking for people who will help you reach your potential and others that you may be able to help to reach theirs.
