Why do so many struggle with authenticity? Why do we often waste a lot of time and energy trying to be someone or something we are not? The only person you can really truly be good at being is you. I don't know about you but I have to be me. People either like it or they don't. It's just too stressful trying to be anyone else. I wasted a lot of my youth trying to be someone I believed others wanted me to be and I failed miserably at it. They weren't satisfied. I was unhappy. It was just a huge mess. As I age, I feel more confident and empowered to reveal my true authentic self and let people choose if they want to be associated with me or not. If they choose not to be, they were never meant to be part of my story - period.
Being fake may work in the short-term but I can confidently tell you that it's not sustainable. Sooner or later, people will figure it out and you'll be outed as a fraud. Having an indoor and outdoor persona creates fragmentation and duplicity. At some point, you are going to forget where you are and unleash the wrong personality in the wrong place.
It takes a lot of work to act one way in public and another way in private. To be true to yourself, you need to be self –aware – aware of your strengths, limitations and emotions and most importantly, be humble enough to let other be themselves.
