The Answer to Excellence

A colleague asked me about setting goals last week. I explained clearly that each of us are responsible for finding an alignment between our personal and professional goals. Until we find that alignment, we live divided and terribly uncommitted. If we can't see our purpose in what we find majority of our waking hours doing, giving our work our very best becomes almost impossible to do.

Personal leadership success is highly correlated with a commitment to excellence. Commitment can be defined as the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause or activity. Sadly, I see many who just literally "turn up" at their jobs. Why come to a job at all if you are not committed to the cause? We need money to live but money is a pretty pitiful exchange for a lifetime. The truth is whatever you are not committed to will never flourish. This includes your career, relationships, and physicality. All you'll get is mediocrity at best.

Find what holds your commitment and achieve excellence. When passion collides with commitment, the results can be pretty astounding. Vince Lombardi said it well with this quote, "The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”
